Our Philosophy

Our training centers on taking the time to show your dog how to fit into your life
in a way that is comfortable for both of you. If you follow these few simple guidelines, it is not hard to gain respect and be a leader:

  • Create structure and consistency in the environment, with all family members on the same page.

  • Begin establishing rules on the first day your new dog arrives.

  • Teach your dog that privileges must be earned. New dogs do not immediately have the same privileges and status as older, established pets, and too much freedom too soon will cause problems for you and your new pet.

  • Do not humanize.

Even if you have an older dog with problematic behavior, with proper guidance, time, patience, and positive training, you and your dog can achieve a more compatible, happier relationship.

Obedience is communication and is taught through repetition/praise, and positive reinforcement.

  • Dogs are creatures of habit. There are no “company” manners – good manners should always be practiced.

  • Corrections should never be mean or done in anger or as punishment.

  • Be kind, be fair, and be patient.

  • Dogs need your time – allow enough time to interact with your dog every day.

Teaching fundamental skills will create a fun, easy-to-live-with partner and, if desired, will lay the basis for more advanced training in formal obedience, rally, agility, or therapy dog work.

When to Start Training

A puppy’s brain is ready to learn at seven weeks, the optimal time to housebreak and begin teaching such household manners as coming when called, sit, stay, and walking on a leash.

Socialization is crucial between nine weeks and five months. We offer a fun and easy small-group class for puppies this age. This is an important time to provide your pet with guidance and avoid leaving him on his own to figure out proper behavior.

However, dogs of any age benefit from positive training, which intensifies bonding, gives a dog security, and helps him fit comfortably into your lifestyle.
